Birthday!

So today is my birthday. Its not a great day to have a birthday...eight years ago it was a terrible day to be turning 14. It was a very difficult day...we lost a good family friend that day. As a result, I have never really liked my birthday. However, today happens to be a great day. A new day, a new year. No longer am I 21, I feel like I got turned down for things for being too young...at the drinking age where most people lose themselves. However I found myself this past year. 22 is going to be a great year, I can feel it already!

So this morning I had the most wonderful surprise. Little man came into my room about 7:30 (which as far as I am concerned is sleeping in!) and he threw a card at me, which according to Dr. D, had to be purple, cuz thats my favorite color. So then he started opening my present (I love it how I don't have to do any of my own unwrapping!) Inside was the most beautiful bracelet I have EVER seen in my whole life! It was from Peir 1, and its an eclectic combination of all sorts of funky turquoise beads and such. I could not have picked out a better one for myself. It absolutely is the best present I could have ever asked for. I also got a matching ring...though it is my favorite color Fuscia in a little flower shape...I will try to post pictures of it.

Anyways, great start to a great year. I have the best job, lots of wonderful opportunities ahead of me, and the best little guy a nanny could ask for.

Peace and namaste.

After the fact...

I meant to mention that the whole time I was blogging the previous post, my good buddy Scooby had taken all of his clothes off and was putting small foam rainbows all over his body. It was quite the creative gesture...

Not always peaches and cream...

We are two weeks away from having a new baby in the house!!! I have been here almost 4 months now...and am learning a lot every single day. Its an experience that not many people can really understand totally and certainly something I have to adapt to on a daily basis. I think the hardest thing I am learning is how to be myself and enjoy my LIFE while living at my job. There really is no line between the two, so the advice I would give to anyone looking to be a live in nanny is that there are two ways to deal with the awkward situation of living with the family you nanny for, and you have to be prepared to do one or the other.

The first situation is to completely push yourself into your work, making your job your life and vice versa. The other way is to make the job just a job and the house just the place you live and spend as much time away and doing your own thing.  I however, would never be able to do the second option...its just not who I am. I am very committed to my job and I am fortunate enough to be working for a family that I adore. It has become very easy for me to become just a part of the family...as a big sister, daughter, aunt, or whatever that may be. I am more a part of the family who is just helping out than an employee, and though my paycheck would say differently, don't feel like the "hired help".

Its not always easy though. This weekend the family was away on vacation and after having my weekend plans cancelled, I spent the weekend at the house alone and had a rough time with that. I miss my friends in Greeley, miss being able to go out and have an adventure, and most of all, miss my family and my puppy dog. I survive by connecting with the people that I used to know, as its become quite a challenge to meet new people here. Every attempt at communication from my friends means the world to me, as its all I have. I am dying to find my own personal out, my way to meet new people and create my own life here apart from the family. I have tried online dating, and that blew up in my face. Who knew you could meet so many people with very negative intentions?

Its the biggest struggle in my life right now. How to meet new people? I have met a few great moms who are also teachers through Scooby's school, which has led to some great playdates, both for him and for me! But the little town that I am in is not very "young adult" oriented, and as I am not a big party girl, it makes meeting people tough. Ideas are welcome!

Happy labor day weekend,

Fran

Introductions

Hello all...

First of all I would like to say that my name is not really Fran. To those who know me personally, you don't need to know my name, and for those who don't, you also don't need to know my name. Nor do you need to know the names of my bosses and my charge, who I will thusforth name Scooby, as that is what I call him most of the time anyways. Having said this, I will introduce myself. My name is Fran, and I am a 21 year old nanny in Connecticut. Three months ago I uprooted my life and moved from Greeley, Colorado, where I was going to school, and moved to Connecticut. Why? Not entirely sure. I love the area, and needed a fresh start in my life. With about a year left to finish my degree, something I am doing online, the flexibility of a nanny job seemed like the best solution. Thus, here I am.

Let me start by saying that I love what I do. Every day. I have known my whole life I would end up working with kids, and my age of preference is either newborns or that preschool/pre kinder age. I am fortunate enough to have both in my life. Well, almost. Scooby is a few months past his fourth birthday, and our new addition will be coming into the world in just over 5 weeks! We do know it is a girl...perhaps she will be called the Peanut for now. I live in the house with Scooby and my bosses, Dr. D and Tiger. Dr. D really is a doctor, she works in an emergency room and Tiger is thus called because he is a huge golfer. Though as of last week he said he was giving up golfing forever...but thats a whole different tale...

Its been an adjustment for sure. I never would have thought that things could have gone as well with them as it really has. Imagine yourself moving all the way across the country into a house with 3 1/2 strangers...people you work with and live with, rely on for all logical conversation both intellectual and revolving around Spiderman...and spend all your time with. It certainly is a change, and one that I still both struggle with and enjoy every single day.

I guess the purpose of this blog is to keep my thoughts on paper about the ups and downs I go through, thoughts I may have and to keep my family updated on my life. I always said I was going to write a book...who knows...this may just be the start of it all.

Cheers,

Fran
